Successful Specialized Operation for a Sixty-Year-Old Patient with Complete Bowel Obstruction
The medical team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah succeeded in saving the life of a sixty-year-old patient suffering from complete bowel obstruction due to a cancerous tumor in the left colon.
The patient arrived at the hospital for a colonoscopy at the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Department, which revealed the occurrence of bowel obstruction caused by the cancerous tumor located 70 centimeters from the rectum. After performing a contrast-enhanced CT scan, taking a biopsy through endoscopy, and examining the tissue, it was confirmed that the tumor was an advanced cancerous growth. Consequently, the patient was transferred to the General Surgery and Oncology Department under the care and supervision of Dr. Ahmed Fathy Al-Husseini, a consultant in general surgery, to prepare for a major operation to partially remove the left colon.
During the preparation phase, the patient experienced a heart attack and coronary artery blockage. Immediate cardiac catheterization was performed, and stents were placed to save the heart muscle. The patient was then transferred to the cardiac care unit.
After the patient's condition stabilized, a committee consisting of surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, and oncologists convened to determine the best treatment options. With the patient and family's consent, a successful operation was performed to remove the left colon, establish an initial connection in one stage with an adequate safety margin, and completely excise the tumor along with all lymph nodes.
The patient received complete nutrition through a central venous catheter, and the cardiac team monitored heart functions. Subsequently, the patient achieved natural bowel movements and resumed oral intake. Post-operative imaging with contrast was conducted to confirm the success of the procedure.
Thankfully, the patient's condition improved, and within a week, the patient started gaining weight. After a month of recovery, the patient will begin further cancer treatment.
