Recovery of a Resident from Near-Complete Paralysis After Over Two Months of Suffering
A resident recovered from near-complete paralysis after enduring over two months of suffering thanks to the dedicated efforts of the medical team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam.
The male patient, in his fifties, was initially paralyzed and unable to move, leading him to be admitted to a major hospital in the region. An MRI scan revealed a large tumor at the base of the central skull, extending to its rear, causing pressure on the brainstem. This pressure resulted in ventricular hydrocephalus and limb paralysis. The hospital that initially treated him only placed a ventriculoperitoneal shunt to drain cerebrospinal fluid without addressing the tumor due to its complex location, size, and spread.
After almost two months with the patient bedridden, the company he worked for made extensive efforts to seek other hospitals that could provide the necessary care. However, many hospitals in the region refused to accept the case due to its complexity.
The company then expanded its search to hospitals in Riyadh, but no private hospital agreed to take on the case. Finally, Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, confident in its capabilities and medical expertise, accepted the patient, reassuring his company that they were fully prepared to offer the highest levels of medical care, especially in complex neurosurgery cases.
Upon arrival, the patient underwent a clinical examination confirming his paralysis and full dependence on a urinary catheter. A navigational MRI revealed the tumor’s pressure on the brainstem and cranial nerves, and its proximity to critical blood vessels. The treating physician explained the comprehensive treatment plan to the company doctor, including that if the tumor was fully removed, the drainage tube would no longer be needed.
The surgery was performed under the supervision of Dr. Sultan Al-Saiari, Consultant Neurosurgeon. The operation lasted approximately 12 hours, during which the Anesthesia Department, led by Dr. Wael, played a crucial role in maintaining the patient’s stability under anesthesia. This stability contributed positively to the patient’s vital signs, allowing the operation to proceed smoothly without complications, despite previous surgical interventions.
The surgery was completed successfully, the tumor was fully removed, and the drainage tube was no longer required. The patient was transferred to the adult neurological ICU after awakening.
Once the patient’s condition stabilized in the ICU, an MRI confirmed the complete removal of the tumor. The patient began to regain movement in his limbs, significantly lifting his spirits, validating the meticulous surgical plan.
In recognition of this success, the company's director and other administrators visited Al-Mouwasat Hospital's senior management to express their gratitude to the hospital’s staff and medical teams overseeing the patient’s care.
The patient remains in the hospital under the follow-up care of related departments, including the rehabilitation and physical therapy units. He is expected to return to his normal life and resume work following physical therapy.
It is worth noting that performing such complex procedures in neurosurgery requires highly skilled surgeons and advanced technology to achieve the desired outcomes. This aligns with Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company's vision of recruiting top talents in specialized medical fields and providing the latest medical technologies and equipment.
