Successful esophageal surgery for an infant less than two days old at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam
The medical team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam succeeded in saving the life of a baby suffering from esophageal atresia (obstruction of the esophagus), a rare congenital defect in which the child is born with a deformity in the esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach), instead of a tube between the mouth and the stomach. The esophagus grows in two unconnected parts. The child with this defect is unable to pass food from the mouth to the stomach and has difficulty breathing.
As soon as the child arrived at the Pediatric Emergency Department at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, he was diagnosed with esophageal atresia (obstruction of the esophagus) immediately after his birth, and he was admitted to the intensive care unit for infants and prepared for the operation.
Praise be to God, the operation succeeded and the lower esophagus was separated from the trachea and the esophageal connection was restored.
This case is considered one of the rare and complex surgical cases that necessitated the presence of an integrated and specialized medical team consisting of a consultant pediatric surgeon, Dr. Muhammad Al-Jalouli, an anesthesiologist, and intensive care consultant, and a consultant in the preterm and neonatal unit. The baby was discharged after recovering, thanks to God, from the surgery.
Pediatric surgery is one of the rare specialties that characterize Al-Mouwasat Hospital, and this is in line with the vision of Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company in attracting competencies and delicate sub-specialties through the use of the latest technologies and advanced medical equipment in this field.
