Saving the Life of a Patient from a Blood Clot in the Respiratory Tract
The medical team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, successfully saved the life of an 18-year-old girl who suffered from a severe coughing fit, accompanied by a significant amount of blood discharge due to severe lung bleeding.
Upon the patient's arrival at the emergency department of Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, Dr. Hassan Abdullah Al-Qambar, a consultant in thoracic surgery, conducted a bronchoscopy using a flexible fiberoptic scope to examine the airway. The examination revealed blockages caused by blood clots in the respiratory tract on the right side of the lung.
An immediate surgical team was formed, including Dr. Hossam Fahmy, an interventional radiology consultant, who performed an embolization procedure using interventional radiology to seal the bleeding arteries. This procedure successfully stopped the bleeding on the first day. However, on the second day, the patient experienced another severe lung bleed that threatened her life. Further examination revealed tears in the arterial venous connections of the lower right lung lobe. Dr. Hassan Abdullah Al-Qambar then performed a lobectomy of the lower lung using thoracoscopy through four small incisions, each no larger than one centimeter.
Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and the patient recovered, leaving the hospital in good health to resume her normal life just four days after the surgery.
