The patient had arrived at the emergency department at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Qatif suffering from a severe stroke and complete paralysis in the right half of his body, with his inability to speak. Immediately, Dr. Muhammad Hussein, a neurology consultant at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Qatif, received the patient and performed the necessary tests on the brain and cerebral arteries, which showed the presence of a blockage. Completely in the left carotid artery, and the perfusion of the entire left hemisphere of the brain was stopped. The clot-dissolving drug was immediately injected and the cerebral catheterization team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam was informed to prepare to receive the patient to try to withdraw the clot.
The patient was immediately transferred to Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam to perform a mechanical clot extraction procedure via a cerebral catheter. The patient was received by the cerebral catheterization team under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Al-Tahir, consultant in interventional radiology and brain catheterization, the brain and nerves team under the supervision of Dr. Olfat Mahmoud, neurology consultant, and the intensive care team under the supervision of Dr. Alfred, intensive care consultant.
The patient was transferred to the catheterization room, where the clot was completely removed from the left carotid artery via a cerebral clot extraction stent and mechanical suction via a cerebral catheter.
Thank God, perfusion was completely restored to the left hemisphere, and then the patient was transferred to intensive care to receive intensive treatment and begin rehabilitation and physical therapy.
The technique of withdrawing brain clots through a brain catheter is one of the latest international techniques for treating cases of acute brain clots, which saves many patients from complete disability or death, God forbid. Providing such modern techniques and keeping up with the latest international recommendations is what we always strive for at Al-Mouwasat Hospitals.
