Rescuing a Newborn Infant Suffering from a Rare and Serious Disease
The medical team at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam successfully saved the life of a newborn infant suffering from a rare and serious disease that had been transmitted to her from her mother through the placenta.
A woman came to Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam during the final weeks of her pregnancy. Upon examination, it was discovered that the fetus was experiencing irregularities in its heart rate. Immediate X-rays and necessary tests were conducted, revealing that the fetus was suffering from early oxygen deficiency. Consequently, the mother was rushed to the operating room, where the delivery was performed by the head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology department.
The newborn was then transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where Dr. Mondher Khalil, a consultant and head of the Pediatrics department at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Dammam, examined her. It was determined that her head circumference and length were below the normal range (30 cm and 48 cm, respectively). Additionally, she had a widespread skin rash on her body and lower extremities, along with severe enlargement of the liver and spleen.
Further investigation revealed that these conditions were a result of a rare and serious viral disease known as Cytomegalovirus (CMV), which the newborn had contracted from her mother through the placenta during the early days of pregnancy.
Dr. Mondher Khalil developed a treatment plan and initiated treatment. Thankfully, the child's condition improved within the first week of treatment, and she made a full recovery after several weeks. She left the hospital in good health.
