We owe this big success to Allah, as the General Surgery Department at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Madinah has achieved a new medical achievement represented in the removal of a very rare tumor in the appendix and the base of the cecum of a patient in his sixties who was suffering from pain in the lower abdomen, with bouts of diarrhea accompanied by mucous secretions, digestive disorders, and a feeling of fullness.

Upon the arrival of the patient to the hospital, the case was examined in the general surgery clinic, and after a set of laboratory tests and advanced rays such as a high-quality multi-section CT scan, it was found that there was a tumor in the appendix and the base of the caecum with dimensions estimated at (70 x 30 x 30). This tumor is a rare tumor, with an incidence of only 3-4 per thousand.

After diagnosing the case, the consultant general surgery at Al-Mouwasat Hospital in Madinah, Dr. Ahmed Fathy Al-Husseini, decided performing an excision of the tumor. The great challenge which faced the medical team was to remove the tumor with an appropriate safety space while preserving the mass without spreading the gel into the peritoneal cavity, which may lead to severe complications and the spread of the tumor.

After obtaining the consent of the patient, he was prepared for the operation, and the entire surgical team was prepared. The Department of Anesthesiology and Nursing was qualified and trained in surgical operations. With the help of high-quality camera and the latest types of surgical staplers, the operation was completed successfully in approximately two hours.

After performing a tissue analysis following the operation, it was confirmed that the entire tumor was removed with enough safety space, and thanks to God, the patient's repeated suffering was ended.

It is worth noting that this type of operation is considered the most advanced and reliant on modern medical technology, which goes in line with the vision of Al-Mouwasat Medical Services Company in attracting competencies and subspecialties and providing the latest medical technologies and equipment in this field.

Madinah - Mouwasat Hospital

In a remarkable achievement that reflects the advanced surgical expertise and commitment to excellence at Mouwasat Hospital in Madinah, a specialized medical team successfully performed a radical gastrectomy to remove an advanced stomach tumor in a 70-year-old female patient who had been suffering from severe fatigue, significant weight loss, and persistent vomiting—unable to consume even water or juice.

Comprehensive Case Evaluation

The patient was referred from another hospital for feeding tube placement. Upon arrival, her case was immediately reviewed by a multidisciplinary medical committee led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Husseini, Consultant of General Surgery and Oncology, with participation from specialists in gastroenterology, endoscopy, diagnostic radiology, and oncology

After conducting essential investigations, including multi-slice CT scans and endoscopic biopsy, the team decided on urgent surgical intervention to remove the tumor.

Advanced Surgical Gastrectomy

The complex surgery involved:

  • Radical resection of approximately 85% of the stomach.
  • Complete removal of surrounding lymph nodes and peritoneal membranes to ensure no cancer cells remained, confirmed later by histopathology.
  • Creation of a gastrointestinal anastomosis to connect the remaining stomach to the intestines, restoring the patient’s ability to eat.

Recovery after Gastrectomy

Following five days of intensive care, the patient gradually regained strength and was able to eat orally for the first time in over a month—a milestone in her recovery journey. She was discharged in excellent health, marking a significant success for the surgical team.

Mouwasat commitment to excellence

Madinah - Mouwasat Hospital

Mouwasat Hospital in Madinah proudly announces the successful completion of a complex microsurgical procedure performed by Dr. Ahmed El Shazly, Consultant in Orthopedic Surgery and Microsurgical Hand Procedures

Case Details

A 41-year-old patient presented with chronic pain in the right leg, numbness, and altered sensation in the sole of the foot for over five years. The pain worsened with pressure or touch and intensified at night, causing severe insomnia. Despite consulting multiple physicians, the condition remained undiagnosed.

Accurate Diagnosis

Clinical examination and advanced imaging (X-ray and MRI) revealed a Tibial Nerve Schwannoma, a benign nerve sheath tumor located in the posterior compartment of the leg. This nerve controls foot movement and sole sensation. Continuous pressure from the tumor posed a risk of loss of sensation or motor weakness in the foot and toes.

What is Tibial Nerve Schwannoma?

A Tibial Nerve Schwannoma is a rare, benign tumor originating from Schwann cells that form the nerve sheath. It affects the tibial nerve, which is responsible for foot movement and sensation in the sole. While the tumor grows slowly, its enlargement can compress nerve fibers, leading to:

  • Chronic leg pain
  • Numbness or loss of sensation in the sole
  • Weakness in foot and toe movement

Microsurgical Tumor Removal

Dr. El Shazly successfully performed a microsurgical excision of the tumor (5×3 cm) while preserving nerve fibers. The patient was discharged the next day without complications and experienced significant pain relief and restored sensation within days. Histopathology confirmed the complete removal of the schwannoma.

Mouwasat Commitment to Excellence

This achievement reflects Mouwasat Hospital’s dedication to advanced neurosurgical and orthopedic techniques, ensuring accurate diagnosis and minimally invasive procedures for optimal patient outcomes—aligned with our vision of delivering world-class healthcare.
