Khobar – Mouwasat Hospital

Mouwasat Hospital continues to reinforce its leadership in advanced surgical care across Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region. Under the expertise of Dr. Hassan Alqumber, Consultant in General Surgery, Chest Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, Endoscopy, and Robotic Surgery, the hospital’s thoracic surgery team is pioneering the use of Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) for displaced rib fracture repair. This makes Mouwasat one of the first centers in the region to adopt this latest technique.

What is VATS Rib Fracture Repair?

This minimally invasive procedure represents a major breakthrough in thoracic surgery, offering patients multiple benefits:

  • High precision in rib fixation
  • Reduced post-operative pain
  • Faster recovery and return to normal activity
  • Lower risk of complications compared to traditional open surgery

The surgery involves creating small incisions in the chest wall, using a high-definition thoracoscopic camera, and fixing fractured ribs with specialized plates and screws.

Evidence-Based Outcomes

Global medical studies confirm that minimally invasive rib fracture repair leads to:

  • Improved lung function
  • Reduced need for mechanical ventilation
  • Lower incidence of pneumonia
  • Decreased chronic pain
  • Faster return to daily life

This makes VATS rib fixation a gold standard for managing severe chest injuries and displaced rib fractures.

Dr. Hassan Alqumber’s Role

Dr. Hassan Alqumber is among the first surgeons in Saudi Arabia to integrate this advanced technique into thoracic surgery practices. His extensive experience in general, thoracic, and robotic surgery has delivered exceptional patient outcomes and elevated the hospital’s readiness for complex cases.

He also plays a key role in training surgical teams and advancing clinical skills, reinforcing Mouwasat Hospital’s position as a regional leader in specialized surgical care.

Mouwasat Hospital - Khobar

In a remarkable medical achievement that reflects the readiness of the medical staff and the efficiency of emergency services at Mouwasat Hospital in Khobar, the surgical team led by Dr. Hossam Abter -Consultant of General Surgery, Advanced Laparoscopy, and Robotic Surgery- successfully saved the life of a patient suffering from severe abdominal and systemic poisoning caused by a large stomach wall perforation. The high-risk emergency surgery was performed after midnight.

Case Details

The patient arrived at the Emergency Room in critical condition, complaining of severe abdominal pain that had persisted for several days, accompanied by low blood pressure and a rapid heartbeat, which required immediate intervention for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Clinical and imaging examinations revealed a large perforation in the stomach wall, leading to leakage of digestive fluids into the abdominal cavity and causing acute poisoning that posed a life-threatening risk.

Precise Surgical Intervention

The patient was urgently transferred to the operating room, where a complex emergency surgery was performed, including:

  • Closing the stomach perforation.
  • Thorough cleaning of the abdominal cavity.
  • Continuous monitoring in the Intensive Care Unit for several days.

By the grace of God, the patient’s condition stabilized, and he was discharged from the hospital six days after surgery in good health.

Importance of Rapid Response

Dr. Hossam Abter emphasized that such cases are among the most critical surgical emergencies, where any delay -even for a few hours-could lead to fatal complications. He confirmed that the readiness of the medical team and the speed of decision-making were decisive factors in the success of the operation.

Mouwasat’s Commitment to Excellence

This achievement highlights Mouwasat Medical Services Company’s commitment to providing comprehensive medical care around the clock, utilizing the latest medical technologies and specialized teams to ensure rapid response and save lives in the most critical moments.
